Description
Violet Red Bile Agar (VRB) 500gm Himedia
Violet Red Bile Agar (VRBA) is a selective medium recommended for the isolation, detection, and enumeration of coliform bacteria, particularly in dairy products, water, and other food samples. The medium inhibits the growth of gram-positive organisms through the presence of bile salts and crystal violet, making it ideal for selective cultivation of gram-negative enteric bacteria, especially coliforms like Escherichia coli.
Composition (per liter):
Peptone – 7.0 g
Yeast Extract – 3.0 g
Bile Salts – 1.5 g
Lactose – 10.0 g
Sodium Chloride – 5.0 g
Neutral Red – 0.03 g
Crystal Violet – 0.002 g
Agar – 15.0 g
Final pH (at 25°C): 7.4 ± 0.2
Uses:
Detection and enumeration of coliforms in:
Milk and dairy products
Food and beverages
Water and wastewater
Quality control testing in food microbiology laboratories
Routine microbial monitoring in pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries
Features:
Selective Medium: Inhibits gram-positive organisms using bile salts and crystal violet.
Differential Medium: Contains lactose and neutral red to differentiate lactose fermenters (which appear red to pink colonies) from non-fermenters.
Reliable and standard: Conforms to ISO and APHA methods for coliform detection.
High Clarity and Performance: Ensures reproducible results with high colony visibility.
Suitable for Pour Plate or Surface Spreading Methods
